David's Lawyer.

John Baker has spent more than two decades in courtrooms across Clarke County, Oconee County, and northeast Georgia — and he has spent that time on one side of the fight. He represents individuals and families against insurance companies, corporate defendants, and government entities. David against Goliath. That is the work.

John earned his J.D. from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law in 2002 and his B.B.A. from Georgia College & State University in 1999. He started his career as a prosecuting attorney for the State of Georgia before moving to plaintiff's civil trial work. He is admitted to practice in all Georgia state courts, the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Today, John focuses his practice on two areas: probate and fiduciary litigation — will contests, trust disputes, fiduciary breach claims, and guardianship disputes — and serious personal injury, including auto collisions, medical malpractice, and wrongful death. He has obtained dozens of verdicts and settlements for clients in the Athens area over 23 years, including six- and seven-figure results in state and federal courts.

He has deliberately maintained a limited caseload throughout his career. The reason is simple: when you hire John Baker, you get John Baker — not a junior associate, not a paralegal running your case, not a voicemail. Direct, hands-on representation from a trial lawyer who knows your case inside and out.

The Trial Difference

The through-line across John's practice is a willingness to take cases to trial. Many attorneys talk about going to court. John actually does it. That trial-tested credibility gives his clients leverage at every stage — from the first demand letter through jury selection. Insurance companies and opposing counsel know that when John Baker is on the other side, there is a real risk of facing a jury. That changes the calculus on every settlement offer.

John is resolute in his stance against bullying tactics from insurance companies and law firms comprised of hundreds or even thousands of attorneys. He advocates passionately for justice and believes in the noble nature of the legal profession — a belief reflected in his consistent recognition at the state and national level.

Recognition

John's commitment to professional excellence is recognized by peers, clients, and the judiciary:

  • Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating — the highest possible peer review rating — for ten consecutive years, including the Judicial Edition, which reflects assessments from members of the bench
  • Martindale-Hubbell Client Gold Champion — 2025
  • Nation's Top One Percent — National Association of Distinguished Counsel
  • National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys — 2022 nationally ranked
  • Top 40 Under 40 — National Trial Lawyers
  • Super Lawyers Rising Stars — 2013
  • Top Georgia Verdicts — Fulton County Daily Report, 2011

Community Leadership

John has served as President of the Athens Bar Association, Chairman of the Board of the nonprofit Filmathens, and was a member of the inaugural class of the State Bar of Georgia's Leadership Academy. He is a member of the Federal Bar Association and the Western Judicial Circuit Bar Association, where he served as President-Elect.
